April 26 marks 38 years since the Chernobyl nuclear accident, one of the biggest man-made disasters. The tragedy shook the whole world and had catastrophic consequences for people and the environment. Its effects are felt to this day.
Demonstrations were held in the localities led by the mayors of Our Party throughout Friday to pay tribute to all the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of this catastrophe and to commemorate the heroes who lost their lives fulfilling their civic duty.
In Fălești, the event brought together the veterans who participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident, their family members, students of the local educational institutions, employees of the law enforcement agencies. Next to them, the mayor Alexandr Severin laid flowers at the monument built in memory of those who died as a result of the damage. A minute's silence was also observed.
On this tragic day, the employees of the town hall of Rîșcani, led by the mayor Victor Bogatico, together with the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, honored the memory of the victims and laid flowers at the memorial in the center of the city.
Commemorative actions also took place in other localities in the country. In Bălți, councilors, members of the Our Party fraction in the Municipal Council, participated in the march on the occasion of the Day of commemoration of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster.
The leader of Our Party, Renato Usatîi, sent a message on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, in which he mentioned that the participants in the actions to liquidate the consequences of the accident are worthy of the greatest honor, and their families deserve gratitude and admiration for the difficult trials they overcame with dignity.
"This day is also important to not forget the mistakes of the past and to prevent their repetition in the future. Unfortunately, almost four decades after the Chernobyl accident, the fear of a catastrophe of planetary proportions returns. Hopefully wisdom and prudence will prevail. And these are not empty words. The more often and louder we repeat them, the faster our common voice will be heard", says Renato Usatîi's message.
More than 3,500 Moldovan citizens participated in the actions to liquidate the consequences of the tragedy of April 26, 1986. Annually, the town halls of the cities led by the mayors of Our Party grant material aid to the participants of the Chernobyl actions. And this year, they received assistance worth 300-500 lei each.
